Springfield Cricket Club Saturday III v Great Waltham II on Sat 09 Jun 2012 at 13:30
Springfield Cricket Club Won 8 Wickets
Match report
On a miserable rainy day at the Corra, the 3s arrived in a surprisingly upbeat mood. After winning the toss and choosing to field on a soft pitch, captain Nice never looked back as he watched his opening partnership of Butt and Mean tear through the Waltham top order with variations of pace and movement. When Mean had to take his compulsory break after a 7 over spell, it was left to Riddett, called up at the last minute, to repeat his previous performances from the 2s last year, despite not having bowled a ball in 9 months. In spite of an erratic start, he soon found his line taking 2 wickets in his spell of 11 overs. Then the emerging colts of the team took over, with Mean returning to pick up his first 5for of the season, and Hitchen and Hartley each returning a single wicket. A mention should also be made of Howarth, who bowled a very economical spell, of 3 overs with 2 maidens, with batsman struggling to get him off the square.
With such an inspired bowling performance, captain Nice took the decision to drop down the order, leaving the rest of the team disappointed not to see a singles-a-plenty opening partnership between him and Howarth. He called on young unexpectant Hartley to share the opening with Howarth. The Springfield innings got off to a solid start, however looked to be rolling downhill with the sudden losses of Hartley and Grant. Despite this, Howarth took the attack to the Waltham bowlers, leaving them scratching their heads as to why their batsman could not repeat this dynamism. He rushed to his 50 from 42 balls, then shared a quick fire partnership with Goldsmith, who produced a very technically correct 6 to win the game in a 17th over that was hit for 21.
