Match Report Week 6
(a Frost report)
After having beaten Rayleigh away from home the week before, we now had to host them at the Corra for the second of four encounters over the season. One thing that we weren’t sure of, was how the weather would pan out with constant changes on both google and bbc weather apps.
Before the warm up started, congratulations were made to Noah for his debut in the 1s and once the warm up was completed without the guidance from JC Fitness, the sign was made by the skip that we were to bat first. With the skip urging us to get the pads on early so we could start ahead of schedule, the game began…at normal time.
With Clarky missing, it was a JLJ/Frost opening pair. Rayleigh opened up with some good opening bowling from their skipper Gilmore, unfortunately they were unable however to make the breakthrough before drinks. With JLJ and Frost putting the bad balls away they were able to make a good start to the innings before Frost was the first to go making 46. Mani was next to the crease, and whilst being in the changing rooms, I didn’t get a chance to see him bat, lets leave that at that. JLJ would continue on his way with the help of Jim both piling on the runs and upping the run rate well above a run a ball. JLJ finally fell off the bowling of Ox down at fine leg for 66, which brought the real CP to the crease with Jim to push for a strong finish to the innings. With the runs flowing and many a whack, CP was then caught off the bowling of Nolde (who replaced Ox after having been taken out of the attack for being warned for excessive beamer bowling!). This brought Wasim to the crease, and unfortunately the good partnership of the week before wasn’t to be repeated as Wasim fell shortly after coming to the crease and Jim followed just after ending another great innings of 71. Once the last ball was bowled we had set the visitors 269 to win.
After another fantastic Mrs Clark tea, and many a cake and scone had been devoured it was now time to go out and try and run off all the food that had gone down. Impey and Nolde opened the batting and struggled to get a real grip of the first 15 overs, with the vast amount of the runs being scored down to third man. With darkening skies and a slight wind, Marrion and Ovel beat the bat on too many occasions to possibly count, before Impey finally went for a long 5 trapped in front by the man they call Sven. Nolde decided to take on the bowling and was able to get the scoreboard ticking over however he soon fell off the bowling of the skipper, Lee Brooks, after one too many aggressive shots. Barker and Cook were also victims to Brooks, who had taken 7-15 the week before. Unable to get the 5 however as he finished on 4-24 off his 10 over stint. Francis who had opened the week before, decided to come in to bat at 5 just as the new ball bowlers had finished their spells, and he was able to single handedly keep the scoreboard ticking over however the visitors were quickly falling behind the run rate. This was mainly due to the sharpness of wicketkeeper Mani Singh, off the bowling of the Bismarck. Two sharp stumpings really stopped any chance of the visitors being able to help Francis reach the target as he was left 90 not out, Chalk had cleaned up the tail with ease, finishing with 4-44. Having timed their innings wrong, the visitors finished 218-9, just over 50 runs short of the target score.
5-1 and still top of the table, the next weeks’ fixture away at Goresbrook will be an important one and hopefully a fixture to extend our lead at the top of the Premier Division.
