High Roding v Springfield Cricket Club Saturday I on Sat 30 Jul 2016 at 1pm
Springfield Cricket Club Won 6 wickets
Match report
A cracking sunny summers day and the first team travelled to the picturesque High Roding ground, with a sincere intent to get back too winning ways.
Upon arrival the track look a belter, on closer inspection it had a little grass on top due to the previous afternoons rain, but still a good hard wicket none the less.
The returning skipper, who missed the defeat to Rettendon due to a really urgent family matter..... or had to go to a BBQ, i'll leave it to the readers to decide where he was and why. Bloody BBQ!!!!! Managed to lose the toss. As such on the hottest day of the year, we took to the field.
A tidy opening bowling spell from Mazza, who had the dangerous Holgate caught at cover by the skipper for 8. Was out done by Sven, who bowled cracking lines and was very unlucky not to be rewarded for his efforts. Once Sven had bowled his allowed quota of over's he was replaced by Josh, who with his Golden arm set about dismissing the High Roding top order. Sargeant was the first to go caught behind by Hudders, Gallop Jnr quickly followed beaten for pace by a good bouncer and caught at square leg by Dancey. King then nicked off and was caught by Lats at slip. Josh had 3, but it was time for the skipper to get in on the act. Brooksy removed the eldest of the Burns siblings LBW, before have the youngest of the brothers caught behind by the impressive Hudders. Hipkin then charged down the track and was stumped first ball by Hudson. Dancey then bowled Wheen to take a well deserved wicket.
Josh returned, and should have had his fourth, but Mazza dropped a straight forward chance at point. (I made it look a lot harder than it was, sorry Josh) continued to plug away and not trusting the field, well mainly me, caught Rory Burns off his own bowling for a well played knock of 61. Some late hitting from the lower order ticked the score to 171. In my opinion a below par score on a very good track. A very good all round bowling performance from the lads, backed up ably in the field. Josh finishing with impressive figures of 4-33 and Brooksy 3-40.
After tea Latimir-Jones and Clark opened up for us. Lats looking his usual classy self quickly raced to 29, before he played an uncharacteristic loose shot and was caught at mid off. This bought Chay to the crease, fresh from a series of bol******gs from us senior folk, for turning up 2 minutes before the start of the game, for naughty reasons. Chay never really looked settled and was caught playing a loose shot for 9.
Symo was the next into bat, he looked calm and composed, and set about chasing the total down with the help of Clarky. Clarky was looking set, until he tried to clear the infield and was caught for a very patient 22. This bought club stalwart Vinnie to the crease, coming off the back of his maiden hundred, Vinnie was making his first, first team appearance since Wham split, (on Saturday 28th June 1986). Vinnie knocked his second ball for a nice composed single, but disaster struck soon after and he was struck on the full in front and given out LBW. Sven promoted to number 6 in the order came in.
A match turning decision was made in the next few balls, Gallop who bowled very well, had a bemused looking Symo given out caught behind on about 20. In a fantastic sporting gesture Gallop recalled Symo as he realised he hadn't hit the ball. This was the turning point in the match, as Symo made the most of this sporting gesture, and along with Sven clinically and carefully finished the game off for the loss of 4 wickets. Jim hit the last ball for 6 to get us the extra batting point. Every point is crucial in what looks like a title race set to go down to the wire. Jim finished 69 not out and Sven a first team best 26 not out, to cap off a good day for him.
