Match report
Match 2 – Back down to earth
After our win against Rayleigh in the first game of the season hopes were high in the Springfield dressing room of making it 2 wins out of 2 with the prospect of a home game against newly promoted Canvey Island who had been beaten by the 2s towards the end of the 2016 season.
Upon inspecting the pitch the SCC skipper L Brooks decided today was a bowling day and as such was surprised when the toss was won by Canvey who then subsequently elected to bat first. As all were getting changed, the baggy green was presented to new £50m signing Rob Wickham who was eager to impress on his debut and he had the chance to do so after being handed the new cherry, first over of the game and the choice of ends much to the annoyance of seasoned opening pairing Ovel and Marrion (who knew he had to impress with Attwell breathing down his neck for his spot in the first team). It didn’t take long for Wickham to justify his large transfer price, bowling Canvey opener Shearcroft second ball of the game with an uncharacteristically loose full toss. This was probably the highest point of the game for an over confident Springfield side who then let this good start slip in the subsequent overs as both Ovel and Wickham struggled to find their length and rhythm as J Cassen, Lee and, after Ovel removed Lee for a well made 18, Sutherby. A change was needed so skipper Brooks turned to the old reliable option in Marrion who finally had the chance to impress with a slightly older ball. After a few loose deliveries to start, adding to the inexplicably large extras tally for the innings, Marrion soon found his line and length, and for once just settled in on that spot making scoring difficult for Cassen and Sutherby. This pressure soon began to build and likely lead to the demise of J Cassen for a solid 40 giving Wickham his second wicket of the day. After Wickham had finished his designated 10 overs, finishing with figures of 2-47 we turned the screw introducing Brooks to test the Canvey batsmen with his “spin”. Brooks and Marrion were giving very little away with Sutherby settled at one end it was up to us to start taking wickets at the other and this is what we did with none of the Canvey batsmen from 5-11 scoring any higher than 5, the unfortunate Sutherby was left stranded at the non-strikers end 47 not out with Canvey bowled out for 163 in 32.4 overs, special mention to Marrion taking 4-42 from 9 with the pressures of needing to fight for his place.
A rather large Mrs Vince tea was very much enjoyed and out stepped Prudence and Frost to start the SCC attempt at chasing down the, what was deemed to be fairly modest, total. The chase started well with Prudence picking up 12 from the first 5 balls of the innings, tucking into some leg stump half volleys however his innings was abruptly ended on the 6th ball after walking down the pitch to an in-swinging Yorker which would likely have been another leg stump half volley had he stayed where he was. Mani Singh walked out to replace him, the less said about this “innings” the better and Symonds was soon walking out to the middle with the score 12-2. Frost and Symonds then began to settle in and pick of the bad balls until Frost got too far across to left-armer J Cassen and was bowled round his legs for 10. In came Clark who was a man made for this situation with this being the environment he usually thrives in, a loud fielding side, adrenaline fuelled bowlers smelling blood and a real intense battle, however he was then struck and the pad and sent back to the pavilion which led to the introduction of Powell who was looking to repeat the innings he played over at Canvey the season before however the job at hand was different this time, with the thought of sticking around with Symonds in mind, Powell set about seeing of the remaining overs of J Cassen. All was well and good until the cat was set amongst the pigeons when Symonds was hit on the box playing back to a ball from Tiffin and was adjudged to be out LBW much to the disbelief of the on looking Noak Hill Taverners (who were being entertained by our 3s). Powell was joined by Wickham with a loss to a promoted team now a very real possibility for the second season in a row. Both players tried to be positive however this approach lead to Powell’s demise, chipping the ball up to long off and in came concrete wall Chalk (in both cricketing style and build) who offered stiff resistance to the excitable Canvey Island attack building a nice partnership with Wickham to bring back some element of hope to the Springfield boys until Wickham was inexplicable given out caught behind having blatantly hit his pad to the point where it was only a half muted appeal from the Canvey players, alas the finger went up and Wickham had to depart. After another strong partnership between Chalk and Ovel and some last gasp heroics from Marrion, the total in the end proved too much for tail enders left in a position they should never have been in with Springfield succumbing to a 13 run defeat.
After witnessing the jubilant scenes of the Canvey boys (who, it must be mentioned, fielded and bowled exceptionally well, far beyond the expectations of us at Springfield) and feeling the hurt again of losing to a newly promoted side much like we did last year, it is now down to the SCC troops to rally and bounce back for a potential banana skin game away to the in form Brookweald.
