Match report GREAT BADDOW VS SPRINGFIELD

After many many Long nights of listening to Sid James go on and on throughout the Winter, The season was finally here, The Green and Gold Army were picked and ready for battle, Great Baddow would be the first hurdle in a Long and Unusual 2016 Season.
The Sun was shining and the weather was great! As we turned up for the Local Derby at the Home of Great Baddow, The side Looked strong and ready to challenge again for the Title with a couple of Old Stall warts missing Opening Bowler Sid James and Grandpa Symonds we welcomed in Josh “ Catwell “ Attwell and Iestyn “ Donald Trump “ Powell Iestyn now Sporting a new hairstyle which resembled the Billionaire Tycoon.
The cry went out from the skipper “ay up lads, let’s have a warm up “and the season was off PT Clark started put us through our paces as the skipper went off to do the Toss still unsure on what to do he asked his noble stead JLJ From LONDON!!!

The Coin went Up we were Bowling!!!!!

The Umpires called play and we were off Sven Steaming in from the park end bowling a lovely Line and length, which in turn was followed by the hustle and bustle of the cat from the Tennis Court end, WICKET we had struck early and the Opening Batsman for Baddow was Gone Brilliant caught low down at Mid off by the Skipper which would set the tone for a superb display of Catching from The Green and Gold in the tropical heat of Great Baddow, WICKET Number 2 followed shortly after a Lovely Half volley from Sven Kindly hit straight too Chay at Mid On who showed a good pair of hands to take a clean catch, Baddow were on the Ropes at 10 – 2, This Brought 3 and 4 to the wicket for Baddow looking to get them back on track! GONE!!! Attwell has Smith Caught at Second slip by Donald and Baddow were 3 down and looking in real trouble of being bowled out cheaply.
The Opening Bowlers had done their job and had removed the top order cheaply, the skipper looked around for his usual 2nd change Bowlers Sid James and Chay but could only find Chay (Sid James reporting from Brighton Beach where the weather is warm and moist and the top of my head is Sunburnt) yesty was thrown the ball and the young speedsters bounded in, Chay with the first over Yesty with the second and the Baddow batsmen enjoying the extra pace on the ball and the flurry of boundaries that followed it was time for a change and FAST!!! The Skipper turned to Spin with the King of Spin Waz from the Tennis court end and the Mistress of Spin Brooks from the Park end the Boys started to Spin there Web, Baddow reached 100 – 2 when the Mistress Struck removing both In batsmen in the same of 1 being caught at Long on by Chay and the other being caught at Deep Cover by The Whippet himself James “ Dagger “ Clark Baddow were 4 down and the Green And Gold were going for the Kill. The Baddow batsmen nudged their way to 130 odd before the Skipper struck again, Waz had done a great Job and slowing the run rate down and bring the game back to the Green and Gold, the Skipper Opted for change and of came the prince of spin, who struck in his first over with a well flighted slider which was slapped back over his head and looked destine to smash the fence at the Tennis court end, From nowhere came the extendable fingers of JLJ And the catch was taken the boys went wild JLJ Had done it again! a few more over had past and Baddow were limping towards 150, SCC Struck again another fantastic catch from Attwell at Long on and Chalk had another, The Catching of SCC had been fantastic and had proven Clark’s warm up was well with the sweat and tears. A few more wickets fell and some sloppy ground work from the Boys which wasn’t helped by the outfield Baddow had made it 183 with the final wicket falling to a Run out to the Skipper and tea was taken.
The Boys were unsure if that was a Below Par score or a Tough task on a pitch that was lacking any assistance to the bowlers.

The 2nd innings began with Chay and Arguable the best batsmen in the league JLJ Marching to the Wicket to make light work of the Baddow total, The Baddow opening bowlers raced in bouncing Chay and JLJ Who had earlier survived a huge appeal for a caught behind, Baddow were up for the Derby this wasn’t going to be an easy chase. Chay was the first to go being bounced out by the Baddow speedsters Frost was next to the wicket looking to Consolidate the Springfield innings and get the runs flowing, Frost didn’t last long either he was gone again bounced out and caught behind (ed. He was actually LBW).
The fall of the Wicket Brought the Maverick Mani Singh to the Wicket looking to continue along with Lats there excellent form from last season, the runs started to flow the Baddow faithful had gone quiet it was raining 6s and 4s everywhere you looked the ball was disappearing with the Baddow fielders chasing the lost causes.
Springfield were Cruising and it looked as though we would knock these off and be in back in the Clubhouse before 5pm.
Baddow struck Lats caught behind was there a wobble about to happen! Baddow struck again Clark Now GONE! Caught well low down at point SCC Losing 2 wickets for no runs from being 110 – 2 we were now 120 – 4 with only 64 needed but we still had hope with the batsmen still to come and MANI Who was set on 72 and looking great. The Run rate Slowed down as the wind picked up the slow leg spinner began another over he tossed up a grenade and Mani was there to Smash it down the ground, it looked for all money as if it was going for 6 until it held up in the wind and was gobbled by the Baddow captain at long on the Baddow players went Crazy now it really was game on!!!
Waz was joined at the crease by Chalk with Springfield still needing 60 odd there were a couple of tight overs where SCC steadied the ship. Waz had seen enough Whack! Whack! Whack! Take cover on centre court as the ball sailed over Long On 3 6s on the bounce and Springfield were back in control heading for the finish line. The Baddow captain had seen enough of his spinners he called for his opening bowlers to come on and try and get the vital wickets which would see them win and see the former Champions off to a shaky start to their campaign to re capture their title. The quick’s came on and Waz had a go at hooking a Bouncer GONE! Waz was gone and SCC Were up against it.
Sven Strolled to the Wicket were he Partnered Chalk to Face the Music! Bouncer after Bouncer came down Chalk and Sven ducking and diving to avoid the ball Sven hitting a lovely cover drive to bring some relief singles and the occasional 2’s were accompanied by the generous extra’s the bowlers tried everything to claim the wickets of the Springfield Batsmen with only 20 needed and the abuse still flowing from some of the Baddow Players, two 4s from chalk and another from Sven and the Green and Gold were nearly there after a gruelling 30 minute onslaught from the Baddow Bowlers we were in touching distance of getting our season off and running with a win, The change of Bowling came and Sven tucked into a Juicy leg stump half volley 4 Bittzzzzzz and it was over the Title Challengers had overcome a very tricky start to the season and look forward to the next encounter with the Baddow quick’s.
Next week the Home of Cricket Welcome back there all conquering 1st team to face High Roding!!!
