Springfield Cricket Club Saturday I v Goresbrook on Sat 01 Aug 2015 at 1pm
Springfield Cricket Club Won 7 wickets

Match report Saturday 1st August vs Goresbrook
Game 14 of the season saw us welcome a youthful Goresbrook side to the Corra, a couple of enforced changes were made following the defeat to Bentley with the skipper replacing Chalky who has been sent on a scouting mission for the next stag do venue and Chris Frost whom after a promising seasonal debut was replaced by Mark “Velcro” (really, ed.) Hudson who was brought in to fulfill backstop duties.
Goresbrook have made light work of adapting to life in the Premier League having already beaten both Bentley (which we hope they can do again) and OC’s so we were under no illusion that we were in for a tough game in our quest to regain the winning thread.
On what looked a decent pitch the home skipper threw the trusty 2p high into the Springfield skyline (with a slightly swollen jaw after getting a cricket ball smack in the mush during the warm up) Kurt (Whisker) called heads and after watching the coin roll about a Troy Nice (couple of foot) the coin landed on a head, away skipper Whisker had no hesitation in deciding to bat.
Whisker (who was on a Springfield pair) opened up with Curly and they would have been hoping to get off to a decent start but with Sven and The Maid straight on the money bowling great line and lengths (in fact the best they have bowled as a partnership all season I would say) runs were hard to come by, the visiting skipper was given a lifeline early on as Sven found the edge only for the chance to spilled by the usually reliable JLJ at first slip, Sven didn't have wait long until he picked up his first victim as he trapped Curly in front, and then a suicidal run out (no run their son) saw the visitors two down for not many with both Sven and Mazza bowling impressive spells with the run rate barely at two an over.
At this point the captain had a decision to make, turn to lean and mean Saffa (Chay) or go with the more experienced John Smith (whom is now showing a resemblance to being Springfield’s answer to Lancashire legend Ian Austin) Charlie got the call, the long run up marked out and an anticipation that something special was about to happen, the home fans started to clap faster and faster as CP2 approached the crease and then arrrggghhh man down, Charlie’s knee buckled under him as he was in full flow, qualified coach/physio Clarky rushed over, sponge and water in tow and started to rub smithy’s meat and veg (at this point Charles whispered it’s my knee Clarky!) a few stretching exercises were administered and it looked promising that Charles would be ok to carry on when someone mumbled ”Israel is warming up” ARRRRGGGGHHHH, that’s me done for the day skip and a trip to A&E for Charlie was on the cards.
Jordan Calverley had joined Whisker and a steady partnership started to develop with the former playing some aggressive shots in order to get the scoreboard moving, Chay bowled a good spell and it was over to the spinner and slow bowler to go in search of wickets, Yours truly getting Whisker caught and bowled, a rarity these days (I'll say what you're thinking) and a brilliant piece of fielding by Sven ran out Ramduth, a steady flow of wickets followed before Calverley after a well made 67 fell to a great catch in the deep by Clarky, the innings closed on 182-8 which the visitors would have been more than happy with, for ourselves Sven 2-33, Wasim 2-27 and 2-42 for myself in what was on the whole a very good day at the office both in the field and with the ball.

A Mrs Clark tea was the order of the day, Mr Clark relaying what was on the menu, the Goresbrook boys were in for a real treat, it was just a shame Smithy missed it all.
With Charlie not fit to open the batting Chay was promoted to partner JLJ, we knew the chase wasn't going to be easy with the visitors having the pace of Israel Ochwo in their ranks along with young spinner Barwick who have both picked up wickets throughout the season.
I would hazard a guess that the only game that Izzy hasn't picked up a wicket this season would have been in our fixture earlier in the season, a good contest was developing between himself and JLJ who is a batsman at the top of his game right now, looking solid in defence and Chay acquitting himself very well in his new role we made a steady start, Chay eventually falling for a well made 28, Mani joined JLJ in the middle and looked back to his old self playing the one ball coming down rather than the middle one of the three in the last few weeks, once more a good partnership was developing before Mani became Ochwo’s first Springfield victim falling to a sharp full delivery and then JLJ (whom scored an excellent 62) was caught acrobatically at gully off the same bowler when trying to guide one down to the third man region.
At this point the visitors had a little hope with two new batsmen at the crease in the shape of Jimmy and Clarky (who have been in this position more than once this season) but some great application the guys saw us home with a solid partnership, Jimmy 27no and red inker Clark 21no.
Credit to Goresbrook who never gave up, they have a good group and will win more games than they lose in the Premier Division and also credit to their spectators who created a good atmosphere for the game to be played in.
On the whole an excellent performance from us, the perfect way to bounce back, we now sit 8 points behind Bentley in our quest to retain the title, it’s not going to be easy but if they slip up they will know we are sat waiting to capitalize.
