Burnham Sports v Springfield Cricket Club Saturday I on Sat 13 Jun 2015 at 1pm
Springfield Cricket Club Won 10 wickets

Match report Week 7 of the T Rippon "Mid Essex" League took us on our travels to sunny Burnham on Crouch to play last years Division 1 runners up Burnham Sports.

Having arrived at the ground at roughly 12 noon it came as a huge surprise to everyone to see Mani, Jaz and Wasim all walk out of the clubhouse at the very latest 12:30, I think this must be the earliest arrival at a ground all season including Goresbrook which according to Jaz "is only ten minutes away"

After a quick inspection along with fielding practise it was decided that if the new man in charge called correctly we would have a bowl first, on a track that looked a little slow and with overhead conditions favouring our swing bowlers when Charles rotated his shoulders in the middle we knew what our first task was.

Once on the field in the customary huddle 10 men all looked towards the stand in skipper for some wise words, and what came what was truly inspiring "errr we don't want to be here, so I suggest we bowl them out and then try and score more runs than they did" it sounded like Brookie had told him exactly what to say before sunning himself in Ipswich.

Fresh from a night in his own bed at a reasonable time Sven opened up with Maz, we had to wait till Maz's first ball of his first over before any real action commenced. The number 2 opening batsman fresh from the batting school of Hudders pushed hard at a slow half volley straight to the hands of the big man. Given our recent catching performances Maz tried his best to drop it but eventually clung on and then turned and appealed to the umpire for a caught and bowled. After much more appealing and awkward silences the correct decision of not out was given as the umpires couldn't believe Ben had actually caught the ball. Next ball edged to Clarky at fourth slip for his second golden duck of the game.

From here both openers settled in to great rhythms with Sven ripping out the top order. Special mention to the ball who removed the number 4 batsman which can only be described as a beauty,"unlucky pal maybe next time". (Ed. Springfield's start in the field could have been ever better had self proclaimed best fielder in the club Jim "fumbles" Symonds held on to what can only be described as an absolute dolly of a catch off Mazza). Unfortunately with the power in his own hands the skipper decided to bowl himself first change, after contributing to 70% of the team's wide balls in only three overs and after a lucky chopped on wicket he let Northy have a go. Northy bowled his three overs well without much luck.

At the other end it was the turn of Wasim to bowl, what a great spell of bowling this was. Wasim ripped out the lower middle order making sure that no one else had to help take his wickets (three bowled and two LBWS) returning figures of 5-22. Sam Brown bowled in nicely in tandem and was unfortunate not to pick up a wicket in his six overs.
Burnham 169 all out in 40 odd overs, time to chase.

After a good tea with some highlights being the Somosa's and chicken biryani Charles and JLJ donned the pads in order to start the chase.

I don't think there is a better opening partnership in the premier division and today they were out to prove it. Right from the start JLJ was class, following on from his fine run of classy innings this season he dispatched anything short or anything too full. Charles on the back of a fine hundred the week before settled in ready to carry on. I cant say much about the run chase as it only lasted 17.5 overs but perhaps that says it all. Scoring at very nearly 10 runs an over the two batsman looked at ease, hitting boundries at will while remaining solid in defense. both batsman brought up half centuries before JLJ went out in search of another 100. Unfortunately in only hitting the last ball for 4 and not 6 he was left on 98* while CP watched the last 30 runs sat on his bat at the other end for a well made 68*.

A great performance although sterner tests will come, as a wise man once said "You can only beat what's put in front of you".

Tabloid rumours after the game heard Lee Brooks is thinking about his position given the way the youthful captain acted today #Brookyout

Hudders.
(Ed. 2 and no surprises that Charlie 'Panesar' Prudence added another drop to his ever growing catalogue of 'fumbles'...)
