Goresbrook v Springfield Cricket Club Saturday I on Sat 30 May 2015 at 1pm
Springfield Cricket Club Won 123 runs
Match report
Saturday saw us head off down the A12 to face a Goresbrook side who had taken to life in the Premier League pretty well judged on the league table, one change from the side that beat Bentley with Wasim from returning his trip in warmer climates replacing Chay who due to coaching duties was unable to build on what has been a very positive start to life in the first team.
On arriving we found a pretty odd looking track which was a little spongy and one would think would offer something to the bowler but after the previous weeks batting demolition job it was decided if the coin came down in our favour we would have a bat, toss won in we went.
After hearing a few reports on the pacey Ochwo and Ross finding some steep bounce life was far from easy for Lats and Charles but we got through the first few overs without losing a wicket, bad balls began to be put away before the Goresbrook keeper went down injured jumping for joy after catching what he thought to be the wicket of CP (had to be carried off due to an achillies issue), this was not to be as Charles pointed out throughout the day he had a red mark on his shirt where the ball hit him (looked like lipstick to me) so in doing the right thing (I'll mention this as I saw it wasn't in the "Brook" match report) the away skipper got kitted up and fielded as 12th man until a replacement could be found.
After battling hard Charles was the first wicket to fall rather unfortunately (although the home side didn't think so) to one that spat off a length, hit his arm and trickled on to the stumps. This brought the inform Singh to the crease (after having some cream applied by the delicate hands of Hudson) and after looking at a couple both him and Lats started to put the ball away at ease, Lats unfortunately run out for a well made 51 after looking well set for another ton. Jimmy came to the crease and once again a good stand between himself and Mani kept the scoreboard ticking over nicely in our favour, Mani eventually falling to a leading edge caught by the 12th man for 53 and Jimmy for an excellent 70. The tail wagged (with the exception of myself) and the innings closed on a very well put together 264/7, for the home side Barwick bowled some good left arm spin 3/53 and was backed by some very good fielding.
After a lovely tea and a brief team talk it was left to Si in his final first XI game (as a bowler at least) to lead us out.
We got off to a dream start with Sven bowling the dangerous home skipper Whisker in his first over. Barwick and Maund showed some good intent alongside having the odd slice of luck and putting away a few poor deliveries. They were also aided by a few fielding lapses. However once we had realised we were there to win the game and not have "Bants" with the opposition we hit top gear and normal service was resumed. Mazza bowling very well picking up 4/50 off 10, Sven getting back to his best with 2/40. I got in on the act with one and even turning a couple (the left handed Ochwo saying a couple were unplayable....ok so I made that up!) and last but not least Mr Dance who I swear had tears in his eyes when Jimmy took the first catch signing off with 2/22.
In a game with plenty of chirp from both sides, the home lads will win more games than they lose this season and were positive from ball one, good luck to them and see them at the Corra in a few weeks.
For us, we are hitting top gear and lets take that into this weeks game at home to Great Baddow.
