Springfield Cricket Club Saturday I v High Roding on Sat 23 Aug 2014 at 13:00
Springfield Cricket Club Won 3 wickets
Match report
Once again Saturday was upon us. It was the penultimate game of the season and the boys were looking to make it 15 from 15 by beating High Roding. Although we was being lead into battle by a new skipper: Charlie Prudence.
The weather was cloudy with sunny intervals, perfect for some swing bowling. The toss was lost and High Roding elected to bat.
Springfield took to the field and made their normal huddle awaiting for some inspiration from the newly appointed skipper - the words that came out of CPs mouth were some what extravagant but seemed to work! As I mentioned the weather was perfect for swing so you would think the normal swing magician twins would open up as normal.. this however was not the case Saturday as the skipper thought his right arm medium was perfect for the job. Although as the saying goes 'rubbish gets wickets' the skipper lived up to this bowling a half volley outside off which M.Hussain hit straight to J.Clark to take good catch.
A partnership started to develop between Holdgate and R.Hussain, with Holdgate hitting consecutive boundaries. Although this was off the medium pacer and not the swing of Ben Marrion. This clearly showing that swing was the way forward.. But yet again the medium pace of CP managed to grab the wicket of Holdgate with a Prudence combination with Ollie, on his first team debut, catching it at deep wide mid-off. The 'thinker' finishing off with 2-30 of his 12 showing what swinging the ball could do, and CP finishing with 2-35 off 7 overs.. more runs off less overs.. I say no more.
After this Springfield really turned the screw, with the spin triplets sharing 5 wickets between them. Special mention to Sam Brown making an excellent 1st team bowling debut! Ready for many more matches to follow in the future! High Roding finished with a slow 156-9 with R.Hussain top scoring with 70.
Special mention to Mr and Mrs Clark for doing a superb tea which all the players enjoyed hugely!
Back to the cricket and it was now Springfield's turn to bat.. due to Sven not getting a bowl he was fired up to open the batting with debutant Ollie Prudence. Before the pair went out to bat in the changing rooms Ollie said to Sven and I quote "I'm glad you're 1 and I'm 2 as I get the look at the bowling.. and I can't be out first ball of the innings like you, It would be funny if you got out first ball."...(Ed. and my god it was funny)
The boys went out to bat and Sven took guard at the strikers end. M.Gallop cantered in, released the ball.. it swung in sharply then nipped away off the seam.. Sven, with a huge stride in, played the swinging ball.. but due to the nip away took a slight edge of Sven's bat and carried through to the keeper. Best ball bowled in T-Rippon history. Sven was unlucky but kept his head held high knowing he couldn't do anything about a one in life time ball like that.
The top 4 batsman scoring 3 runs between them with left Springfield looking like they were on the ropes.. but they didn't know that the 'gun show' Clark was now coming to the crease. Ollie P had stuck around and then became another of Clark's run out victims. Clark tried pushing the ball back past the bowler but Gallop got one of his hoofs on it and diverted it onto the stumps. Prudence was replaced with the not so good Prudence. CP played some good shots through cover but then got trapped by what he considered a questionable LBW, although from where I was sitting was very much out.(Ed.-Plumb)
Symonds then came to the crease to join Clark who both made their way to half centuries: Jim's coming off around 65 balls and Clarke's coming off around 100 balls. Well batted Clark for that average. The thinned on top boys carried Springfield home winning in the 43 over by 3 wickets. (Ed. have a glimpse your dads way pal, the futures shiny!!!) (edit edit NIBBLE NIBBLE, Symonds!)
Well done to everyone who played! 15 from 15! role on the last game of the season!
Sven.
