Old Chelmsfordians v Springfield Cricket Club Saturday I on Sat 16 Aug 2014 at 13:00
Springfield Cricket Club Won 6 wickets
Match report
This week saw us travel to second place OC’s knowing that an away win on the coupon would seal a 2nd Premier League title in 3 years. An early meet was in order due to expected traffic congestion with the V-Festival taking place we arrived at the Memorial Sports Ground with plenty of time to prepare so after a few autographs for fans (Mazza being the fans favourite, can only think he was mistaken for a member of “Right Said Fred”) we got to work.
A good lively warm up conducted by fitness coach Clark set the tone for the day. The skipper called heads at the toss but not for the first time this season the coin came down a tail, home captain Westwood had little hesitation in deciding to bat which was a positive move as the home side looked to prevent Springfield making it 14 wins on the bounce.
The now customary team huddle took place and the positivity was there for all to see, from ball 1 Ovel and Marrion were straight on the money and before long the wickets began to tumble but it was a start beyond our wildest dreams, Sven bowling the inform Mear and having the dangerous Ahmed caught behind by a great grab from Hudders (who has made the transition to Premier League wicket keeping look easy….not sure about his batting yet mind!!!) Mazza then got the big wicket bowling Rehman and the home side were in all sorts of trouble 3 down and not even double figures in the score column, wicket 4 fell soon after as Zareefi watched a field change and Jimmy go back to long on before hitting it straight down his throat next ball (Cheers) this brought together the partnership of Lee and Rob Wickham who to their credit battled hard and dug in against the superb bowling despite struggling to score runs, Prudence eventually trapping Wickham in front and a fantastic piece of glove work saw Hudson stump Lee off a leg side wide by Brooks (planned), wickets continued to tumble at regular intervals and the innings closed with the home side making 93 all out off 40 overs, 1 wicket apiece for Charlie and Ben, 2 for Wasim and 3 for both Brooks and Ovel…
The away side walked off to a standing ovation from both home and away spectators which was well appreciated and more to the point well deserved.
The Springfield innings started well as we set about chasing down our target of 94 with 50 overs in the bag, Lats putting away a couple of loose balls from Jake Wickham to get the scoreboard moving, at the other end Charlie was having a good battle with the impressive Rob Wickham who found his line and length early on, Rob was the first to strike with Lats playing a loose shot caught at mid wicket by Zareefi after looking well set, this brought Clarky to the crease. In the 10th over Westwood decided to bring off spinner Zareefi in to the attack and it was a move that changed the game, bowling with good variation and lots of revs he removed Clarky who decided to leave one that spun back and wiped out the stumps and then trapped Charlie in front, Northy followed shortly after bowled once again by Zareefi which brought together the partnership of Symonds and Brooks with the score on 40 odd for 4. By this stage the home players had plenty to say and could sense another chance of winning the game and with this keeping their title hopes alive, both myself and Jimmy were forced to play a lot of defensive cricket and with credit to Rob and Zareefi (not sure of his first name) they would have been the best partnership we had faced all season, patience was the key and the scoreboard started to move back in our favour picking up the odd single or two along the way we made our way to 60 odd when Wickham finished his spell and was replaced by Faz, the odd loose ball was dispatched and now it was ours to throw away, Jimmy hit Faz for consecutive 4’s and it was left you yours truly to hit a 4 to seal the victory and the title, the celebrations could begin.
Man of the match was given to Ben but it was decided that I should have the honour and drink the two pint jug...beginning the end....DOD on the pitch, sorry Mr Northfield you have to win it with a duck...off the pitch I'll take it for lasting 3 hours (EDITED-extremely generous 3 hours)of the planned night out before going home to bed!!! I blame the lack of food at tea (EDITED-I blame the weak northern constitution) and drinking champers like it was pop...never again or at least until the 30th!!!!
I personally would like to thank all the players for all the effort throughout the season, we have won the title as a squad of around 15 players and each and everyone has played a part, I would like to thank the people who come and supported us home and away and last but not least the people who give up their Saturdays to do the tea's...I am told this weekend is a Mrs Clark tea....GUTTED..
Well done fella's
PS Simon Dance was unavailable for comment after the game!!(EDITED a few comments were heard later in the evening!!)
