Match report Hornchurch Athletic 3rds v Springfield 4ths

On a cold and overcast day at Raphael Park Romford, we arrived to find no
sign of the opposition. When they finally arrived at 12:40 and opened their less than salubrious changing rooms, Hornchurch won the toss and elected to bowl first.

The two young Hornchurch opening bowlers kept a tight line and length and made it very difficult for openers Richard Trim and James Gooday. After showing some good patience Gooday started putting away a few bad balls and the innings started to gain momentum. After Trim fell, driving the ball to extra cover, Gooday and Aldworth senior started to compile a useful partnership. Aldworth fell for 39 in the 19th over stupidly hitting a full toss straight to mid-wicket. This brought Jack Swann to the wicket. Gooday and Swann started to build the partnership and got the score to 120 after 30 overs. Gooday departed lbw for 37 having set the innings up nicely for a final onslaught. Shaheen Arain and Swann then started to accelerate with Swann hitting the ball harder and harder as his innings went on, making good use of the very fast outfield. After a late flurry of wickets due to the return of the opening bowler Swann then hit a six and a two in the final over which took him to a thoroughly deserved half century. The final total of 189-5 looked to be more than enough with the bowling lineup for Springfield.

Hornchurch started their innings quickly, with the usually reliable Alan Warley struggling to find his line and length and young Alfie Hunt finding it hard to control his outswing. A double change of bowling brought on Ben Hitchen and Aldworth snr, who managed to slow the run rate down with tight bowling and Aldworth tempted the opening batsman to drive uppishly to mid-off where Alan Warley just hung on to what should have been a comfortable catch. Hitchen continued to bowl excellently but with no luck and the young opener took some chances and hit a couple of sixes. Hitchen finally got his reward with one of the worst balls of his spell, a full toss which was duly hit to the safe hands of Alfie Hunt at mid-on.

A fortuitous back injury to Aldworth snr curtailed his spell and brought Aldworth jnr into the attack a few overs earlier than planned. This turned out to be the turning point in the game as Junior started to bowl with great control, flight and change of pace. He soon removed the opener for and excellent 43. After this wickets fell at regular intervals with Will Aldworth not relying on his fielders by continually hitting the woodwork, including the wicket of the opening bowler who hit Will for a huge six and lost ball in the trees, however he was brave enough to flight it up again and bowled him two balls later. the runs kept coming and there was 30 needed with 6 overs to go and four wickets in hand, it was going down to the wire. Warley came back on for a second spell and bowled a much improved spell claiming a wicket of his own, Will then disturbed the stumps again for his first senior 5-for. Alfie Hunt claimed a wicket of his own and we needed just one more wicket for victory with 10 and 11 at the crease and 18 runs to win. It seemed to be a done deal but the young batters had not given it up and when the no. 10 hit Alfie for a six in the 38th over the target was down into single figures. Will bowled the 39th over and with his fourth ball claimed his sixth victim (all bowled) to finish with the excellent figures of 8.4 over 6-28. to see us home by just five runs. Making for a very happy skipper.

An excellent match from both teams and really tense finish. Special mention to Ryan Harvey, Matt Trim and Alfie Hunt, who all fielded superbly.
