Goresbrook v Springfield Cricket Club Saturday I on Sat 18 Jun 2016 at 1pm
Springfield Cricket Club Won 8 wickets
Match report
On a breezy and overcast Saturday afternoon the current league leaders travelled to the May & Baker Sports Ground to take on Goresbrook.
Brooksy lost the toss but surprisingly on a dampish track Goresbrook chose to bat first. Mazza was given the first over (no dear readers he has not, once again, regained his crown as the senior bowler) as Sven was late due to Chay's paper round over running.
After a tight first 8 from Mazza and Sven, Goresbrook skipper Whisker was caught by Symo sauntering backwards at slip off Mazza for 6. Irving was joined at the crease by Messenger and some lusty blows were struck by both however the strike was not being rotated. The scoreboard was still ticking along slowly as Sven finished his excellent opening spell (7/3/15/0) with our hosts struggling at under 3 runs per over.
The spin twins of Brooks and Khalid then came to the party and the run rate slowed to a snails pace. This was helped by some excellent fielding (bar Fumbles and Frost Jnr's inability to understand the ball spinning off of the bat) with overs 15-25 going for just 12 runs.
'Concrete Boots' (bit rich Ed.)(Ed. Ed. I think you mean pot kettle) Khalid bowled Messenger for 27, and Brooks picked up the dangerous Claverley for 0. A cracking catch at short extra cover by Was highlighted the energy in the field.
Wickets then fell consistently to Chalky who picked up the well set Irving, caught Symo in the deep, followed by Hussain who played an interesting shot a ball innings as well as Barwick. Brooksy also returned to pick up another couple (a shocking rendition of Bon Jovi's I'm halfway there was heard in tribute to former tail mopper Dancey). Some good lower order hitting by (incredibly squeaky) Harris pulled Goresbrook up to a modest 140-9 off their 45 overs. Excellent spells by Sven and Brooksy in particular, rounded off a very encouraging all round bowling and fielding performance.
After tea we got off to a slow but steady start with Frost ticking along nicely and the usually explosive Chay, not quite firing on all cylinders (22 dot balls before getting off the mark). However it wasn't long before Meldew Jnr, having found his eye joined Frosty in clearing the boundary rope and Springfield looked well set at 68 without loss after 20 overs.
Chay was the first to fall for 22, being bamboozled by the left arm spin of Barwick, and subsequently bowled. (Frosty assured the author Chay merely missed a straight one {hooked fish emoji!!} This brought Manpreet to the crease. Unfortunately his batting display did not match the phenomenal effort he put in behind the stumps. Mani scratched around and was eventually caught trying to whack his way back into form for 4. Wasim has the video of this and can be found on our instagram page if you fancy a laugh. Jimmy strolled to the crease to join Frosty and the pair patiently and clinically chased down the total required. Some tight overs from Barwick and Messenger made Chris & Jim work hard but Frosty carried his bat for a very calculated 76 not out and Symo finished unbeaten on 33.
Good signs as the ones travel to Bentley for a table topping clash this weekend. Good Luck Boys!
