Match report After the tropical heat of the Great Baddow Recreation ground we were treated to some more typical British spring weather at the Cor(r)a for our second match of the season. After one game undefeated, skipper and SCC hype-man Brooks was already bigging up the lads. With the club looking strong as a whole. the returning Symonds could only be slotted in at 6, while Marrion began the unwinding of his career with a return to the twos.

Having won the toss, MC Brooks decided it was a chance for the batsmen to put away their chasing nerves and set a total for our bowlers to defend. The now established opening pairing of James “Fingers” Latimir-Jones and Chay “the only CP” Pollinger completed their pre match rituals and got to work.

Runs flowed from the off, mainly off CP’s bat, with 13 coming from the first over off the uncharacteristically inconsistent Sargeant. Townsend bowled tighter from the Car Park End and with the pitch exhibiting some signs of 2-pacedness there were difficulties for the two to time the ball. JLJ eventually getting frustrated and swinging and missing a straight one from Townsend (2-52). CP fell shortly afterwards to a well taken caught and bowled chance off the same bowler.

However, the seemingly always in form (once he gets past the convincing appeal for caught behind from his first ball), never on time, Mani “Snickers” Singh made it look easy with his usual array of wristy flicks and inside out strokes… and thankfully none of those sweep shots… Along with Oldman Frost, the two of them built a strong partnership and continued to keep the runrate at above 6 an over building excitement in the stands that a score of over 300 could be on the cards.

However, having passed his second successive 50, Mani was caught behind to the spin of Angus Burns, James Clark was skilfully run out by Frost (“Yes, yes, yes, no… #sorrynotsorry” – time for some sprint training this week sunshine), Symonds came and went, before Frost also fell to the spin of Burns (2-54). This left The ‘Field somewhat precariously placed at 180-6.

Luckily our deep batting line up came to the rescue, with spin twins (non-identical) Wasim and Misty Chalk scoring quick 20s, and another not out from Disco Lights Ovel ably supported by Brooksy took us to a challenging 282-8 after our allotted 45. Adam Holdgate finishing with two lower order wickets, and going for 69 off his 9… must have taken skippering advice from our Lee…

After a hearty tea, I was glad to be standing at first slip for most of the second innings. Not that I particularly enjoyed what I saw for the first 5 overs; our senior opening bowler, Missoula Ovel, struggled with line and length in his first two overs. This wasgreeted gleefully by the middle of Holdgate’s bat, and despite Cattwell picking up a wicket at the other end, High Roding were off to a flyer and up to 40-1 off 5.

However, Josh bowled tirelessly for 7 overs (1-29), and Svenny pulled it back bowling his last 5 overs for 7 runs (having gone for 30 from his first 2) meaning at 15 overs we had pegged back the High Roding innings to 70-1.

The double change was what really tightened the screw for Springfield… Brooks on for Ovel, and Khalid on for Attwell. Both spinners started well with good control, and after Wasi (whatya mean wasi?) frustrated Burns into holing out playing a shot in anger, Holdgate looked to accelerate, targeting the short boundary. With a couple of lusty blows he passed his second successive 50 for the campaign, before choosing the wrong boundary to try to clear with a slog sweep, only picking out CP off the bowling of Brooks.

After that, High Roding put up little resistance as the spinners tore through the rest of the batting line up. Another catch for Attwell, an LBW for Khalid after seemingly only the non-striker had appealed (out of frustration at Mani’s constant noise), followed by another one handed catch at slip for JLJ (why bother using two hands?) being the highlights. Brooks had asked Chalk to warm up and bowl, but changed his mind once Wasim took a couple of wickets and exposed the tail, leaving the skipper licking his lips.

The victory was wrapped up as Wasim bowled number 11 Gallop to finish with excellent figures of 6-19 from his 9.1 overs. Ably supported by his skipper; 3-22 from 10. Some nervy moments throughout the match, but a fairly routine victory as it turned out… Can we play you every week? Oh we can…

After the match, our glorious leader had this to say: “Another good win for the boys today as we show good strength in depth of our squad, and even in depth of our Pollingers available. Onwards and upwards..”
