Brookweald v Springfield Cricket Club Saturday I on Sat 20 May 2017 at 1pm
Springfield Cricket Club Won 8 wickets

Match report Match 3 – The backlash

After the prior weeks loss to Canvey Island, many of the Springfield boys were out to prove themselves after below par performances with both bat and ball, Brookweald were the unfortunate opponents on a Saturday where we, hopefully, showed the kind of performance we are looking to put in for the rest of the season.

We arrived at the picturesque Brookweald ground looking to great through the first game of the club enforced Mani Singh suspension. The usual matchday preparation had to be put on hold as significant amounts of rain had fallen in both the week leading up to and the night prior to the game which prevented a much needed morning net session from taken place and meant the warm up was not quite as intense as it usually would be.

With conditions clearly favouring the bowling attack on what appeared to be a damp, grassy wicket, captain Brooks won the toss and didn’t hesitate in giving the opening bowlers of Wickham and Ovel an opportunity to atone for below par performances in the previous week. Everyone headed back to the changing room to get changed for the game, alas, there was a slight issue… you need to bring whites with you to be able to get changed don’t you Mr Frost… After a long, hard laugh at the prospect of Chris having to field topless wearing Clarky’s white tights and trainers, some spare kit was eventually offered up and when Frost emerged from the changing room he actually looked like a cricketer rather then a 40 year old tramp for the first time this season!

Back to the cricket and Wickham was once again handed choice of ends and the first go with the new ball with the wannabe off-spinner Ovel operating from the other against an in form Brookweald batting line up who had amassed large tallies in both of the previous matches to take place this season. Things were looking ominous when openers Abishek and Ariz raced off to 28-0 from 4 overs but then both Wickham and Ovel found their rhythm and this spelt trouble for the Brookweald batsman, a combination of good bowling and some interesting shots left Brookweald in a troubling position at 50-8 once Wickham and Ovel had both bowled out after 2 completely different but both wonderful spells of new ball bowling, Wickham taking 5-23 in his 10 and Ovel 3-19 although Ovel owes one of his wickets to Brooks who took a wonderful, one-handed diving catch at cover to remove Rana… lol jk anyone else would have taken a step the right and caught it with minimal fuss! Anyway… as the new ball pair were bowled out it was time for skipper Brooks and specialist first change Marrion to mop up the tail which, despite previous history, Brooks struggled with therefore the wicket taking was left to Marrion who knicked off both 10 and 11 to the agile Prudence who clung on at first slip and in doing so completed the first half of our atonement for events of the week before, Brookweald all out for 62 in 26.2 overs.

Frost and Prudence donned the pads for a quick turnaround with the prospect of rain in the air and after a solid start Prudence was sent back to the hold bowled by former Springfield player Sheriyar whilst heaving to cow which brought to the crease nosebleed Chalk who had been given a chance up the order after a strong showing the week before and he didn’t disappoint, seeing the Springfield innings through to their target of 63 firstly with the help of Frost but then, after he was adjudged to be LBW off the bowling of Omar, old reliable Symonds with both striking a couple boundaries each in making 14 apiece to bring home the 26 points and send the message to the league that Canvey was a one off.

Special mention go to Wickham (5-23), Ovel (3-19) and Marrion (2-7) who all stood up in good seam bowling conditions and provided much needed high quality performances.

And finally, although a dick of the day hasn’t previously been awarded in other games this season, I feel there is a particular need to once again highlighted the actions of Chris Frost who has obviously put in not just a performance for dick of the day but clearly an early season contender for dick of the season by leaving all his playing whites at home and having to borrow trousers from the opposition, oh dear Chris :’)
