Match Report
Springfield 1st Vs Hatfield Peverel 1st Saturday 20/06/2015
#drybeforeyourewet
The day began with an early morning net as Peverel arrived at the Corra looking to inflict Springfield’s first defeat at home since their previous victory here back in 2013. With the clouds drawing in the skipper went out to toss, the coin went up…… Batting!!! With our visitors missing a couple of players there was only one option.
Lats and Charlie went to the middle in fine form from the previous week's display, the first few overs went past without any trouble with Charlie and Lats both opening their account. A couple more overs had past when Peveral struck! Charlie edging a wide delivery to the keeper and he was on his way. Clark went in at 3 as Mani was stuck somewhere in the south of England. Nobody knows where he was, he was just late again. Lats and Clarky started to increase the run rate at a blistering speed, Lats hitting HIS ball to all parts of the ground with ease and Clarky piercing the field with DAGGER like accuracy. Lats bringing up yet another 50 for the season with numerous sumptuous boundaries in the way only Lats can! He turned to the crowd to salute his achievement, there was still work to be done.
The runs kept coming, Clark Moving on to 30 odd, but just as JLJ looked like he was on his way to another hundred in a remarkable season so far, Peverel struck again. They got their man, Lats caught behind after a tidy bit of bowling from Max Castledine.
This brought Symo to the crease chasing quick runs as the heavens had opened. He also needed just 7 runs for the personal milestone of 10,000 Premier Division runs. 8 runs later, with a streaky cut through point the moment had arrived. The players and fans stood up to clap a fantastic achievement, unfortunately Symo didn't have time appreciate it as it looked as though he was fending of a wasp with some limp waving towards the crowd. The scoreboard continued to flow as the rain increased. The Peverel players were now looking very glum in the damp but the boys pushed on, Clarky bringing up a superb 50 after being promoted up the order, but as conditions worsened the umpires made the decision to come off.
The covers were out and the pitch was soon protected from the elements.
After about 1/2 hour it was decided an early tea would be taken, but no sooner had we gobbled the food the rain stopped and the covers were off WE WERE BACK ON!!!
The Skipper had given strict instruction, we needed quick runs, Clarky and Symo put the bowlers to the sword with the ball disappearing to all parts of the ground. The skies darkened and the deluge came again.... covers on once more!!!
The umpires decided that would be the end of the SCC innings great work from all the batsmen to get us to the magical 225 mark which insured us maximum batting points, with the rain still coming it looked very unlikely the Corra would see another ball bowled.
A good hour later the sun was out and the covers were off, IT WAS SHOWTIME! With Peverel needing 226 to win from their 29 overs at just under 8 an over it was going to be a tough ask. The pitch, still great for batting but now because of the earlier rain offering a little more with the ball. Mazza and Sven marked their run ups out and we were off, Sven starting with a maiden... the pressure was firmly on. Mazza came chugging in (choo choo) bowling a good line and length beating the bat on occasions and creating chances in a very tight 4 OVER SPELL!!!. The first wicket fell with some great bowling from Sven and a good catch from CP who had a parried his previous attempt at the catch before plunging himself to recover and claim the catch.
Peverel went along picking up runs when they could with the ball being chipped into gaps, but falling drastically behind the run rate. The second wicket came after some more tidy bowling from Sven and a good slip catch from Lats. Peverel put up some resistance until the skipper grabbed the ball from his favourite end. With the sun now blazing and Mazza calling for lotion for his head the skipper went to work with the field set to maximum attack mode. The wickets started to tumble and any chance of an away win had gone, it was now a case of could we get the remaining 7 wickets we were chasing before 29 overs were up or worse still, the rain returned. Brookey kept taking wickets with every over he bowled and with yours truly also bagging one the Peverel innings was soon at an end.
There was a slight delay in play due to some crowd interference, with Symo reacting in the only way Symo knows how to... some criticism of the umpiring from a gentleman who could have been mistaken for a Calvin Klein male model in the crowd was rebuked in an extremely subtle and non-confrontational way. The final wicket had fallen and Springfield had won again, great work from the batters and bowlers throughout the day to carry on the relentless home streak, man of the match the Skipper himself for his 6-28 not forgetting Symo’s fantastic personal achievement.
The next episode of the Springfield Saga will take them away to Thurrock for a must win game.
One final shout out to Tim the groundsman who has yet again supplied us with another fantastic strip at the Corra.
