Hatfield Peverel v Springfield Cricket Club Saturday I on Sat 02 Aug 2014 at 13:30
Springfield Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets
Match report
The day started well with Wasim rocking up 2 minutes before the game was due to begin... But after an exceptionally short time getting changed, Springfield had 11 and were ready to get stuck in to Hatfield Peverel's batting line up! It took a mere single delivery for the celebrations to be heard after the Peverel opener hit the first ball of the game into the air at a sleeping Clark who was still able to take a simple catch. Springfield continued their good start as Ben Marrion (renowned for his thinking cricket) produced a good off cutter to trap key Peverel batsman Wild on the crease and he was out LBW for 8. A good partnership followed with Mcintyre and Webb batting well to see off the two openers in an often streaky but effective manner. Skipper Brooks showed the rest of the team how to do it by breaking the partnership and then trapping Mckenzie LBW the very next ball. With captain Brooks on a hat-trick, the fielders closed in, engulfing the batsman with a wall of white around the bat, the delivery struck batsman Spooner on the pad on the full, not out said the umpire, looked like the right decision from where I was. Spooner and Mcintyre then built another good partnership until Mcintyre finally hauled out to Ovel off Brooks for 77. At this point, the evergreen Simon Dance was brought on from the other end to take his mandatory 4 wickets for not a lot, claiming the wickets of Spooner, Moore, Simons and Wright, with Spooner falling to a particularly special catch from Charlie Prudence, some say it's the best catch they've ever seen, I would tend to agree with them. Ben Marrion then showed us how not to catch a cricket ball, using all his crocodile ability to cling on... Inbetween these 4 wickets from Dance, we saw Captain Brooks claim his 4th scalp after the Peverel batsman again hit the ball in the air to specialist fielder Clark, who did what he is in the team for and subsequently caught the ball.
Springfield sent out established openers Latimir-Jones and Prudence to, once again, get us off to a good startbut unfortunately this can't happen every week with Prudence falling for 10 after a glorious straight drive turned scoop shot was caught nervously by Moore and Singh fell shortly after, with a careless shot finding the bowler for a caught and bowled, without troubling the scorers. in came Symonds to steady the ship alongside Latimir-Jones, after a good partnership, Latimir-Jones fell for 39 and Springfield were in trouble at 60-3, Symonds continued to bat with a true gutsy innings battling through on a tough pitch and having the scars to show for it, he managed to take us to 141 before he fell just shy of 50 with the wickets of Clark and N. Pollinger falling in the meantime. Captain Brooks came to the crease and made a glorious 32 but played a loose shot like many of the batsman before him, leaving the game in the balance at 146-7, Springfield needing 39 runs to win and Peverel requiring just 3 wickets for victory and two new men at the crease in the form of Khalid and Ovel. A nail-bitting partnership of 30 from these 2 brought us relative comfort until Ovel tried to run a two that wasn't there and was run out for 11 wit Springfield needing just 9 to win. No one in the hutch was worried though as multiple centurion Simon Dance strutted out to the crease and stylishly hung around with Khalid, allowing Springfield to reach their target of 185 with 2 wickets to spare and Khalid striking a monstrous 6 to win the game off Wild.
Man of the match went to Jimmy Symonds for his gutsy, determined, match-winning 48 and DotD goes to none other than Charlie Prudence for taking a glorious catch but apparently playing a terrible shot to get out, I feel there is room for debate on that.
