Springfield Cricket Club Saturday IV v St Johns Billericay II on Sat 21 Jul 2012 at 13:30
Springfield Cricket Club Won 9 Wickets
Match report
Despite the best efforts of the heavy rain, that fell for many hours during Friday, our pitch at Coronation Park had dried sufficiently to enable play to get underway on time and in some welcome sunshine.
Batting first was always likely to be tricky, although if a total of around 150 could be achieved then a run chase on a drying surface could have proved to be very difficult. It was therefore a bold and positive move by the St John's skipper to insert his team in order to post a competitive score.
We've become accustomed to Anthony and Ian bowling well in tandem and this week was no exception. They again bowled beautifully, and with figures respectively of 7/2/16/2 & 7/2/10/2 they prevented the opposition from getting of to a flying start. It then meant that for St John's to recover they needed some big hitting from their middle order, but with two run outs {courtesy of Chay's fine fielding}; excellent catching and stumping by Fran and Steve; and some tidy bowling by Azeem and Martin, the innings was closed out with just 41 runs on the board.
Our reply may well have foundered early on had a couple of chances offered by both Fran and Chay been taken, but with luck on our side both the openers survived until Chay returned to the pavillion a little prematurely. It was then left to Fran and Jack to see us home for a nine wicket victory.
Next Saturday sees us paying a visit to Galleywood where a tough test will be guaranteed from this keenly competitive club.
