Springfield IV v Herongate II
Saturday 5th June
On
a baking hot and humid day the skipper continued his run of losing the
toss for the sixth consecutive league game and as expected, was asked
to field. Herongate is an unusually shaped ground with very short
straight boundaries which the Herongate openers exploited putting on
over 200 for the first wicket. The young team stuck to their task very
well in the conditions and after 45 overs and nearly 3 hours
Herongate finished on 317 for 6
Everyone did their utmost
in the bowling with Andy Ovel being the best with his 10 overs only
going for 45 and getting two wickets, Ben Hitchens on debut bowled
well in difficult circumstances with no luck. In reply we stuttered to
4 for 2 and finally finished on 170 all out in the 43rd over. The
highlight of the innings been a fine 58 from 13 year old Andy Ovel.

Saturday IV v
Mountnessing 29th May
After a very pleasant week, Saturday
and the rain arrived , however despite the inclement weather we were
able to indulge in a
30 over game. as usual, the skipper lost the toss and was asked to field.
Mountnessing amassed 162 for 5 in their 30 overs with only TJ bowling
well , he took 3 for 32. In reply despite a good stand of 50 between lain
Wright and Zaf Mahmood and some late classic shots from TJ, we only
managed to scrape together 116 for 7 and were comprehensively beaten.

Saturday IV versus Rayleigh III 22nd May On a baking hot day (no complaints as if you take into account the wind chill of 2 weeks ago there was probably a difference of 40 degrees) the skipper lost the toss again and was asked to field on a track resembling the M25. Rayleigh batted very well and amassed 264 for 4. In the field everyone gave 110 percent effort in bowling and fielding with young Sven Ovel being the pick of the bowlers conceding only 30 odd runs in his allowable 10 overs. In reply we never really got going and limped to 166 for 8 with only impetus been given by veteran TJ and young Ollie goldsmith who both scored in the 40's. I would like to comment on the fixture at Rayleigh where the 3's were also playing Rayleigh and it appears that Paul Richardson venture to Beirut where dodging bullets had obviously sharpened his reactions as he took THREE catches report by Mark Patterson

Saturday IV versus Burnham 15th May
Finally we had some clement weather in which to play and a sprightly 4th eleven (including one 17 year old three 15 year olds and a 13 year old) made the trek to take on league leaders Burnham. Once again the skipper lost the toss and we were inserted to bat on a strangely cut wicket. Zaf Mahmood made a watchful 64 ( he must have been studying Martin's batting too much recently) and was out in about the 28th over for 64,seriously this was a very good knock on a pitch with enormous boundaries so our final total of 162 for 8 probably represented a par score of around 190/200 on most grounds, once again Mr extras chipped in with 39. In the reply everyone bowled and fielded superbly Chris Hart took 4 for 45, Trev Johnson was his usual reliable self with a couple of wickets and with 2, for division 8 superb run outs we bowled out Burnham in the 43rd over for 138 and a very good victory was a achieved. Special mention should be made
for Ollie Goldsmith keeping wicket in the
league for the first time with a very good performance and in the
field Gareth Williams and Gary Nightingale were both excellent.

Saturday lV home
against Marconi March 8th 2010
On a bitterly
cold day at Coronation Park the Saturday 4th's winning run, came to an
end.
After losing the
toss we were inserted and made a good start but only Zaf Mahmood
really capitalized
with 42, whilst most others just chipped in with scores in the teens, fortunately
our 12th man mr
extras scored 49 and we ended up on 200 for 8.
After tea
the temperature and wind chill continued to drop ( as did we and Ritchie
continued his run of "form" dropping
their opener of the first ball of their innings) to be honest no one
can be blamed for dropping anything as
everyone was frozen. Trev Johnson bowled well with 4 for 31 and the
skipper went for just 24 of 12 overs but
we were unable to capitalize on this though young Matt Hartley bowled
very well and was unlucky. Whilst
in the field Ollie Goldsmith and Gareth Williams both fielded superbly
covering the ground as
most of the rest could hardly move. Unfortunately Marconi reached
their target in the last overas the clock approached 08.00 pm and
the temperature reached arctic conditions. Roll on the summer

Saturday IV away against
Broomfield II
The day started well in fine weather
with Springfield winning the toss and electing to bowl. At one stage
having Broomfield at 26 for 6 it looked like we may be having a very
early evening but 2 of their youngsters batted
very well with a mixture of good shots , some lucky placement and the
fielders inability to catch, they moved on to 141 for 9 by
the end of the 45th over. The bowling honors going to young Andy
(Sven) Ovel with 10 overs 3 maidens 3 for 17,abley assisted
by Paul Richardson with 11 overs 3
maidens 4 for 31 , unfortunately a comment must be made about Paul's
catching or lack of it, 3 drops including 2
off his own bowling.
As the temperature dropped and the
clouds moved our reply started slowly with 2 early losses but Zaf
Mahmood 38 and Ian Wright with a fine 61 not
out, got us towards our target , Ian was assisted late on by his son
Chris, with a good looking 19, and we reached our
target in around the 35th over with a score of 143 for 4
A very good start to the season was
celebrated by a couple of half's, back at the club.
